Thanks for the tip, Ralph, but yes, I am creating it as an ext2 
partition using DiskDrake.


So I deleted the new-partition and then recreated it (as 
described above), formatted it, mounted it, and used tar to copy 
everything in /home to the new-partition. This time it worked! No
error messages and all the files and directories seemed to be 
there. Hooray! 

However, when I try booting off the drive where I created the 
new-partition, with said partition mounted at /home, all I see 
there is a folder called "lost+found" and all my files and
directories are gone. What does this mean? I ran fsck on the 
new-partition and it said everything was ok. I'm ready to give
up for today. Maybe I'll try it all again tomorrow.
