well, it does seem to be that these mails are kind of popular (well, maybe
just mildly interesting...), so i'm going to post one more follow-up before
i get into the "distro progress" mails (sometime next week, probably. too
many things going on right now...)

two things to REMEMBER :
1. clear /etc/mtab before trying to mount additional file systems. you'll
end up mounting and remounting / several times during bootup (fsck and all
that...), but you only get one chance to mount additional filesystems. a
line like 'cat "" > /etc/mtab' inserted right after mounting root for the
last time (as read-write) will save you many headaches.

2. the situation is the same with dhcpcd, only you have to rm a couple of
files before shutting down. adding a line like 'rm /var/run/dhcpcd-*' will
ensure that dhcpcd is loaded during each boot. there are two files there,
one of which is the pid.

on a side note, mpg123 is really kewl. even alice approves. my only
problem, and hers as well, is that i can't get it to play on repreat. i can
load a playlist and get two kinds of shuffling, but where the hell is the
"ad nauseum" switch? alice is getting lonely during the day with no
music...

lynx with ssl is tha poop! i don't know if i'll ever go back to mozilla
(except maybe to download pr0n...)

fixed an annoying script that made me login in twice during bootup. i have
an agetty-init script that i found in the LFS hints which clears the
terminal before popping up a new login screen. but it clears the screen
*after* you login, thus resulting (somehow) in a double login. i moved the
clearing line up before the actual login, but the problem may be elsewhere,
since i haven't rebooted yet. it did, however, eliminate the double login
for my 7 other terminals.

things are (slowly) moving towards completion. once i get my system
re-organized, i'm going to get serious about making a distro. i should
hopefully have a boot cd this weekend, and i hope to have the system
re-installed and re-organized for development before christmas.

right now i'm thinking this distro will be aimed at the hobbyist,
enthusiast, and the energetic newbie (those people who really like doing
things themselves). since all i aim to do is provide the user with a basic
system on which to build from, i don't plan to have flashy gui's or l33t0
install scripts. all you get is a tarball and the tools to install it.
maybe i'll throw in some instructions, too.

another thing on my mind is breaking away from the LFS mould and really
finding out what is absolutely neccesary to get things working. the idea is
to provide a small base system with a bunch of sources. if that's already
been (or is being) done, please tell me. i aim to fill a niche, and if it's
already been filled, then it may be a waste of my time to make a full-blown
distro.

i'll send out the {manifesto|mission statement|plan 'o' action} once i get
my system ready for development.
