I'm considering writing a program but I don't know what to use. I could write a conventional program using glade or the use php-mysql. Either way I will need to use a database. The advantages to writing a convential program I would GPL it and running it you would have to run Linux or FreeBSD. This would add to the programs for Linux -BSD. The other would use php-mysql and would be web based. I would think you could take this program in either form and convert it to other uses.
As most of you know I'm in the Maintenance Engineering field. Each piece of equipment a company gets has specific maintence needs. Like lubricating the bearings an air handler every quarterly or changing the filters monthly. There is a card you fill out for each equipment with all the information like make, model, serial number, company name, company address, motor hp and other things that you might need parts for. On the card you put down the maintenance requirements for each like lube the bearings every month. Then every month you check these cards to see which items need to be done. When you are finished working on the equipment you date and intial it. There are some programs out there which do this but I'd like to have a GPL version of it. I started looking at some programs out there using php-mysq and some gnome programs which look like they have a database like gnomecard. I'd like to have the ability to print a schedule of items which need to be maintained and a way to say when and if it was done. This program could then be converted to cars maintenance or anything which needs frequent or periodic maintenance. I was also considering a program for inventory and ordering. I have an inventory in a spreadsheet form but it could be put in a database in a conventional program or using php-mysql. Any suggestions I'd like to hear them. Tim
