the other night i went through the LFS book and another web reference i
had found :
to get all of the packages i wanted. most of them i found on the GNU
ftp site, a few from freshmeat, others from all over the place. one
thing is certain, though, i am going to re-compress all those .gz's into
.bz2's to take advantage of the better compression rate.

also, this distro is not going to be "free", as i have several packages
under other liscenses (openssh and openssl are the two big ones...)
much as i respect and like the GPL, there are some things i don't want
to live without.

"bash" was dropped in favor of "zsh". why? i don't know. i guess i
wanted to try something new. "ae" in favor of "vim" because it's
smaller and easier to use (and because vi is vile. vim is so much
better...) was considering going back to "gawk", but "mawk" is faster.
added "cvs", "lynx", "openssh", "openssl", "zlib", "setmixer" (from
debian), "rename" (the perl script), and "mpg123". also updated a few
of the LFS packages (don't worry kids, i'm only a couple weeks or so
ahead of them...) and got a little more than LFS (like "netkit-combo"
instead of "netkit") oh, and i forgot "iptables" and "cron", but i'll
download those before i get started compiling... also need a mail
program...

i also wanted to include the new gcc-3.0.3. has anyone tried this? or
am i going to be the LUG's guinea pig? it was stable, and the latest,
so i figured why not (as you can see, i have no idea what i'm doing...)

package recommendations? remember, this is supposed to be a base system
that one can turn into anything (router, file server, desktop,
whatnot...) no, it's not designed to be small and/or minimal. and no,
i am not going to include an RPM or DPKG program. X will not be
included because you don't need it. well, you may need it, but you
should download it yourself. i'm also considering adding "python", but
i don't exactly consider it essential.

(larry, you may place your arguments here. ;) ).

anyway, here's the full package list, sans a mail program and versions
