the other night i went through the LFS book and another web reference i had found : (www.netspace.net.au/~gok/power2bash/buildMin/buildMin.html) to get all of the packages i wanted. most of them i found on the GNU ftp site, a few from freshmeat, others from all over the place. one thing is certain, though, i am going to re-compress all those .gz's into .bz2's to take advantage of the better compression rate.
also, this distro is not going to be "free", as i have several packages under other liscenses (openssh and openssl are the two big ones...) much as i respect and like the GPL, there are some things i don't want to live without. "bash" was dropped in favor of "zsh". why? i don't know. i guess i wanted to try something new. "ae" in favor of "vim" because it's smaller and easier to use (and because vi is vile. vim is so much better...) was considering going back to "gawk", but "mawk" is faster. added "cvs", "lynx", "openssh", "openssl", "zlib", "setmixer" (from debian), "rename" (the perl script), and "mpg123". also updated a few of the LFS packages (don't worry kids, i'm only a couple weeks or so ahead of them...) and got a little more than LFS (like "netkit-combo" instead of "netkit") oh, and i forgot "iptables" and "cron", but i'll download those before i get started compiling... also need a mail program... i also wanted to include the new gcc-3.0.3. has anyone tried this? or am i going to be the LUG's guinea pig? it was stable, and the latest, so i figured why not (as you can see, i have no idea what i'm doing...) package recommendations? remember, this is supposed to be a base system that one can turn into anything (router, file server, desktop, whatnot...) no, it's not designed to be small and/or minimal. and no, i am not going to include an RPM or DPKG program. X will not be included because you don't need it. well, you may need it, but you should download it yourself. i'm also considering adding "python", but i don't exactly consider it essential. (larry, you may place your arguments here. ;) ). anyway, here's the full package list, sans a mail program and versions for iptables, cron, and rename : ae_962-26.diff.gz ae_962.orig.tar.gz autoconf-2.52.tar.bz2 automake-1.5.tar.gz bin86-0.16.0.tar.gz binutils-2.11.2.tar.bz2 bison-1.30.tar.bz2 bzip2-1.0.1.tar.bz2 cron (not downloaded) cvs-1.11.tar.gz diffutils-2.7.tar.bz2 e2fsprogs-1.25.tar.bz2 file-3.36.tar.bz2 fileutils-4.1.tar.bz2 findutils-4.1.patch.bz2 findutils-4.1.tar.bz2 flex-2.5.4a.tar.bz2 gcc-3.0.3.tar.gz gettext-0.10.40.tar.bz2 glibc-2.2.4.tar.bz2 glibc-linuxthreads-2.2.4.tar.bz2 grep-2.4.2.tar.bz2 groff-1.17.2.tar.bz2 gzip-1.2.4a.patch.bz2 gzip-1.2.4a.tar.bz2 iptables (not downloaded) kbd-1.06-2.patch.bz2 kbd-1.06.tar.bz2 less-358.tar.bz2 libtool-1.4.2.tar.bz2 lilo-22.1.tar.bz2 lynx2.8.4.tar.bz2 linux-2.4.17.tar.bz2 m4-1.4.tar.bz2 make-3.79.1.tar.bz2 MAKEDEV-1.4.bz2 man-1.5j.tar.bz2 man-pages-1.47.tar.bz2 mawk1.3.3.tar.bz2 modutils-2.4.12.tar.bz2 mpg123-0.59r.tar.gz ncurses-5.2.tar.bz2 netkit-combo-0.17.tar.gz net-tools-1.60.tar.bz2 openssh-3.0.2p1.tar.gz openssl-engine-0.9.6c.tar.gz package_list.txt patch-2.5.4.tar.bz2 perl-5.6.1.tar.bz2 procinfo-18.tar.bz2 procps_2.0.7-6.diff.gz procps_2.0.7.orig.tar.gz psmisc-20.2.tar.gz reiserfsprogs-3.x.0j.tar.bz2 rename (unknown version) sed-3.02.tar.bz2 setmixer_27DEC94-5.diff.gz setmixer_27DEC94.orig.tar.gz shadow-4.0.0.tar.bz2 sh-utils-2.0.patch.bz2 sh-utils-2.0.tar.bz2 sysklogd-1.4.1.tar.bz2 sysvinit-2.83.tar.bz2 tar-1.13.patch.bz2 tar-1.13.tar.bz2 texinfo-4.0.tar.bz2 textutils-2.0.tar.bz2 util-linux-2.11n.tar.bz2 zlib.tar.gz zsh-4.0.4.tar.bz2
