I oversimplified.  The X server has the concept of a "set of installed
colormaps".  The aforementioned SGI hardware was capable of installing
several colormaps at the same time, and kept track of which windows
use which colormap.  X supports that.  But the vast majority of X
servers can only install one colormap at a time.

If there is a complicated way to do something, X has implemented it.
If there's more than one complicated way to do something, X implements
an even more complex and general solution that includes all the
complicated methods as special cases.  We just love X.
