Amoeba, which came up in an earlier thread this weekend, is available under an XFree86-style license.
It's designed from the ground up as a clustering OS, including parallel compilers, debuggers etc. The website is at http://www.cs.vu.nl/pub/amoeba It sounds as though Prof. Tanenbaum's been investigating some intriguing topics including how to have scalable (on a global basis) system of user friendly URI's, fault tolerant directory services, security in distributed object models and some other things along those lines. You might also want to check out Prof. Tanenbaum's home page especially the bit about Linux. its at http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/home/faq.html the bit about linux is buried way down towards the end. http://www.efn.org/~laprice ( Community, Cooperation, Consensus http://www.opn.org ( Openness to serendipity, make mistakes http://www.efn.org/~laprice/poems ( but learn from them.(carpe fructus ludi) http://allie.office.efn.org/phpwiki/index.php?OregonPublicNetworking
