xawtv uses bttv ,tuner, videodev and i2c modules. If I remember right when
compiling a kernel include the bttv and videodev options. It's been a while.
I had my sound going at one time but now the sound is down but the video
works, but the reception around here is bad. I'm thinking about compiling my
kernel again. Debian has a better way of compiling a kernel. What it does is
makes a deb of the new compiled kernel so you can install it and if it
doesn't work you can use the stock kernel and try over again. It's like
making a rpm of your new compiled kernel. It even does lilo for you, so when
you install it it runs lilo. I'd like to see an option to run grub or lilo.
It's very sweet.

I don't think you have one of the modules installed is the reason your
getting those errors. I remember having the same problem a long while back.
You can always run a google search of the error messages and you will find
something. Include xawtv with the search.
