All said and done, it is always better to 'roll' your own kernel-image packages. It is also called as 'configuring and compiling the kernel'. There is a Kernel Compilation HOWTO at http://www.ldp.org/. You can 'brew' your own kernel-image packages by installing the kernel-package. Please do an `apt-get install kernel-package' and take time off to read the docs inside /usr/share/kernel-package. > Thank you from a Debian newbie.
