For CPU load, memory/swap pressure slmon (http://slmon.sourceforge.net) can help. It will use some resource, but something like gkrellm (a visual system monitor) can sometimes give you a direction (e.g. if lots of procs are running, maybe the O(1) kernel patch might help). Check: http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=system+monitor§ion=projects&x=0&y=0 Floyd sounds like fun (shows system load on the kbd leds) Some tuning sites: http://home.att.net/~jageorge/performance.html (mainly server, but general too) http://www.linux.com/enhance/tuneup (a mess, but you might find something useful) http://www.tunelinux.com (hasn't been updated in awhile) http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/hdtweak.html (info on using hdparm)
