There's been quite a bit of chatter about this on the Darwin lists at
apple.com. I do not know if Darwin/x86 suffers the same issues. But on the
Mac OS X side, there's been a lot of issues with UFS and corruption. There's
also been some issues with many apps not being able to install on UFS
volumes. From what I recall, Apple's suggested fix for the time being is to
use HFS+.

Check here or the Darwin lists for more info:

<speculation>
- According to Apple documentation I've read, HFS+ supports multiple forks
and UFS supports only single forks. Carbon simply simulates multiple forks
on filesystems that do not support them. The issue might be here.
- Seems like I read somewhere that HFS+ is faster than Apple's (old, slow)
UFS implementation, even with the ": to /" directory separation routines. I
can;t find the original page/email, though, so take this with a grain of
salt.

There's a bunch more URL's I could dig up on the subject, but I'm too lazy
right now :-). Let me know if you're interested, and I'll try and dig up
more. Most of what I've read has been on kernel developer lists, and in
kernel docs...
