I think this has already been addressed at length by one of the Gnome
founders.

"Based on .net" is a bit deceiving.  I read the email that was linked to
on Slashdot and K5 and what I got out of it was that the applications
programming framework that MS is calling the .NET framework is being
cloned (my word) for the Gnome project in order to leverage the
technology to make programming for gnome as easy as possible and as
language independent as possible.  They are basically using MSes work
and research to the advantage of Gnome.  This does not mean that Gnome
is a MS wannabe system or whatever.
