I always found problems by making another user acount and comparing the
files. If if works for one user and not the other then it's a configuration
file. If it doesn't work in either then it might be a permissions problem.
I found that starting programs in a shell gives a lot of usefull information.
I then go to the web and use google to search for the error message it gave
me. Normally someone has posted a problem and a solution. One time I found
one of the directory sizes were off so I copied the directory from another
user and then used chown to change ownership. It worked.
