Sun Hardware> Anybody have any suggestions/opinions (boy, now I am asking for it.....)
Since you asked.... <from www.netbsd.org> NetBSD/sparc64 is a NetBSD port to Sun's 64-bit UltraSPARC machines. It supports some of the Sbus based UltraSPARC systems (Ultra1 and Ultra2), many of the PCI based UltraSPARC systems based on the UltraSPARC IIi CPU (Ultra5, Ultra10), as well as UltraSPARC IIe based systems (UltraAXi). Also included is support for some UltraSPARC I & II PCI systems, and users have reported success on the Ultra 30, 60, 250 and 450 using -current. Any of the other drivers from the NetBSD/sparc port may also work once ported. Presently, NetBSD/sparc64 supports certain Ultra platforms (see below). The 32-bit kernel runs most NetBSD/sparc binaries (kernel groveling tools are the exception, and hopefully can be fixed). A 64-bit kernel runs 64-bit binaries, and has support for running most 32-bit binaries as well (however, this is still in development.) Easily installed binary distributions of NetBSD/sparc64 are available for the 1.5.2 release and for snapshots of NetBSD-current. We strongly recommend using a NetBSD-current snapshot, as the general support for sparc64 in 1.5 is poor. <snip> UltraSPARC Ultra1-family Systems --------------------------------------------- CPU-specific support for the Ultra1 family of systems was written by Eduardo Horvath. Supported Hardware: The UltraSPARC Ultra1 family was an early low-end series of Sbus-based workstations from Sun Microsystems, Inc. It includes the following models: Ultra1 model 140, 170 Ultra1 Creator model 140E, 170E, 200E Ultra1 Creator3D model 140E, 170E, 200E Sun Enterprise 1 Module 140, 170, 170E UltraSPARC Ultra1-family systems include the following hardware: UltraSPARC I or UltraSPARC II CPU. Built-in Fast SCSI controller. Built-in AMD 7990 (LANCE) ethernet interface Two Zilog 8530 serial chips, which provide one general-purpose serial port, as well as the keyboard and mouse ports. One CS4231 audio device (play support only) One NCR 53C94 SCSI adapter One LSI64854 parallel port Creator and Creator3D graphics adapters (not supported) NetBSD/sparc64 also supports other Sbus devices on UltraSPARC Ultra1-family systems, as described on the Sbus bus hardware support page. Known Bugs for the UltraSPARC Ultra1 port: Note that very few of the drivers have been thoroughly tested. <NetBSD plug=OFF> The only experience I have with NetBSD/Sun hardware is with the SPARC2 I posted about recently. Asside from the dead RVRAM chips the install went well (I floppy booted then installed via ftp to a NetBSD mirror). You can read oh-so-much-more about NetBSD/Spar64 at www.netbsd.org/Ports/sparc64/ Cheers, Beaker - daemon advocate - running NetBSD-1.5.2/i386
