I found the problem> I got bit by a windows "feature" when I got the
patch.pl file to put onto a floppy. windows named the file patch.pl.txt. But
unless you tell windows not to hide known extensions windows won't display
.txt and everything looks okay. I believe there was a virus a while back the
exploited this "feature".
