Yes the AMD XP processors are great. They run faster and cooler than the older T-Bird CPUs. Of course the first thing to ask in building a system is 'how much can you spend?' Let's take $1000 as your computer budget. Before you say no to that number just remember what you got for a $1000 just a few years ago. Now, as I was saying... Pentium 4 2Ghz (boxed with 3 year warranty) 512MB PC2100 DDR Really now, only a 10Gb drive?? How about 40Gb? Intel motherboard with 3 year warranty 32MB GeForce2MX - still a reputable card that does well in MOST situations. Integrated sound... not sure that works in Linux yet 16x10x40 CDRW - Sure there's faster but who REALLY needs it? How about a NIC? Modem? Floppy of course? Strong case with reliable power supply The box can easily be done under $1000. Can guaranty the hardware for a minimum of 1 year. Hard drive, CPU, and mobo with 3 year manufacturers warranty. You supply the OS, I'd install if you really wanted it but custom is always better since you pick the packages you'll most likely use the most. Eh?
A decent 17" CRT with 3 year warranty -about $150. Cheap one on sale at Office Depot, Staples, etc... on any given weekend for about $99. A laser printer? That alone will be a few hundred $$. Now we spec an AMD system.... Athlon XP2000+ 512MB PC2100 40GB 16x10x40 CDRW Gigabyte or Asus motherboard (most reliable choices). You'll not find any MSI, ECS, or PCchips mobos in our shop.
