Mandrake is an upgrade? Slackware would be understandable. I may give that another try sooner or later. Probably before I do Gentoo again. I really only know RedHat on the desktop. Of course I rarely ever have any real problems even with the strange toys I may get. Problems with the scsi card would be a little above me. In general RH usually does a good job of autodetecting and configuring new hardware if it's something standard. Have you tried invoking kudzu during startup to see if you could mangle the hardware config?
