Thanks for everyone's input. It was quite helpful. I tried the Mandrake GUI first, so I went to "System/Services" in the Mandrake Control Center to see what was shown as running and what loads on boot. I stopped ipchains & iptables there, and I stopped one or two other things that looked unnecessary for my situation, such as prelude and bastille-firewall.
Then I tried pinging and could ping both ways. Ahhhh. My task for the weekend I guess will be learning Samba and IP Masquerading now.... Thanks again.
