Thanks Bob, and others that have responded to my
question.  I will most likely reboot the system, I
just didn't want to if I didn't need to.

I suspect a hardware "glitch" occured during last
Sundays backup.  One of the three BU files had a zero
length.  I have tried to run that portion of the
backup again and those tries have ended up in a D
process status also. There are about 15 anonymous FTP
processes that are D too, all from about the same time
frame.  I"m not sure a reboot will solve the original
problem, but maybe it will allow the system to operate
properly again as it has for almost a year now.  We'll
see how this Sundays backup goes and watch it closely
for more Uninterruptible sleeping processes.
