Thank you!  I think I can figure that out.  My direction of data travel is
primarily towards Linux.  Once I have things figured out I can drop windows.

"network directly" means lots of things.  They all have tcp/ip stacks
so can all connect to each other to communicate.  They need only the
same application protocol, such as ftp, ssh, smb or a variety of others.

If all you want to do is share files then samba(smb) is probably the
best choice for you.  If you'll have your shared drive on the windowsME
machine, just setup a share, then use smbfs on the linux machines to mount
the windows drive.  If you want to share the drive(s) of the linux machines,
then you need to setup the full samba daemon and depending on your distro
may require more configuration.

It's probably not worth your time to setup sshd on the windows system,
so don't worry about ssh.
