searching google....

Listed as "Not working" on "The unofficial PCTel Winmodem in Linux
compatibility database"
databasehttp://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/viewdetails.php?id_no=43
(kernel 2.4.18, rh7.3)

Sure don't know anything about this, but the PCTel drivers have "hsp" in
the name, which MIGHT mean chipset compatibility. Disclaimer: I am NOT
a modem expert, so fry your own hardware. However, trying a potentially
compatible driver like this should NOT fry your hardware; it's more
likely to just not work than to fry something...

Yeah, we might be onto something here: ActionTec, GVC, E-Tech Research,
PCTel and Zoltrix all make HSP56 modems... search for hsp56 on
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20021015a.html
this is the link for the latest list from:
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
(which is listed below)
Looks like they are all winmodems, tho not all are fully reported on...
a number of them are reported to ONLY work in windows, and one or two
"may work with vendor-supplied 'Linmodem' driver"... so I'd say try the
PCTel linmodem drivers if you can figure them out, they're your best
bet. If all else fails, you may be able to use the modem within a WINE
session (windows emulation), and use the connection from linux. MAYBE.

Some windows-only folks have trouble with this modem, too. Hmmm.
