That works great when you are on the console for that OS. The problem comes in when
you are telneting from one platform to another. When I am on a Linux box and I telnet
to a HP, the backspace key is mapped to '^?' by the Linux box. The HP is expecting a
'DEL' character for the erase command. What I want to know is how to I tell what
character my erase key is going to return from my .profile. If I can find that out,
then I can simply do a
stty erase $MY_ERASE_KEY
and set it to what my keyboard is using.

The solution used where I work is to source ~/`uname -s`/profile and then
place the correct 'stty' command in the platform-specific profile.

I know I have asked this before, but I never did get it working right, so
here goes again.
On a daily basis I work on a number of different Unix platforms including
Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, and IRIX. Most of my work is done from either a
HP-UX machine or a Linux machine. Most of these systems use a different
character for "erase" (HP uses 'DEL', Sun uses '^h', Linux uses '^?'). I
know that I can change the character by doing "stty erase ^?", but this gets
a bit tiresome. Has anybody devised a way to determine what the setting
should be for the type of terminal you are on and set it that way? If so,
can you share, please.....
