Have you tried replacing the CD-ROM with a known good bootable CD-ROM, checking to make sure the IDE cable is firmly attached on both ends and/or replacing the cable? If you have been fiddling with the hard drives, you might have pulled the cable a bit loose. You should be able to fix this problem for *much* cheaper than the price of a new system.
