Anyone using SuSE 8.1? The reason I ask is because I have found 8.1 to be easy to install and it found and *correctly* installed the on-board VIA sound of a Shuttle MV42N motherboard. RedHat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0 and Debian 3.0 (even Knoppix) had no such success.
I discovered this with the SuSE 8.1 Live Evaluation CD so I did a FTP install of SuSE 8.1 (while I still had my cable connection). All went very well and I have had an excellent working system for a couple of months ... until I tried to improve the update system with fou4s (fast online update 4 SuSE). Since I had to give up my cable connection and revert to dialup I thought this would speed things up, and it did... considerably. However (there's always a however), after installing fou4s and trying my first update (which failed because the installed versions were not what the updates expected??) the sound has quit working. There are no error messages when the sound modules are installed at boot up or at anytime for that matter. Just no sound. I have checked the volume settings and tried a lot of things to get sound but I have not been successful. It appears that alsa, oss and arts are all installed. Could one be defeating another resulting in no sound? Here is part of lsmod: linux:/home/dave # lsmod Module Size Used by Not tainted snd-seq-oss 27296 0 (autoclean) snd-seq-midi-event 2920 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq-oss] snd-seq 37776 2 (autoclean) [snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event] snd-seq-device 4140 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq-oss snd-seq] snd-pcm-oss 44928 0 (autoclean) snd-mixer-oss 12728 1 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss] isa-pnp 29664 0 (unused) snd-via8233 6380 1 snd-pcm 63328 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via8233] snd-timer 11524 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm] snd-ac97-codec 26628 0 [snd-via8233] snd 31300 0 [snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via8233 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec] soundcore 3396 0 [snd] I really just want to get the sound working again. Any ideas? I would like to just boot with the live eval CD just to make sure it WILL still work (it does fine in windows), but the one I had was on a CD-RW and I have overwritten it. With dialup I have little chance of downloading the live eval ISO again, and downloading the ftp directories for a hard disk install is something I can only think about. Does anyone have the live eval CD or ISO I could copy? BTW, I have a spare 6GB hd (I hope that would be enough room) to hold the ftp directories if someone is willing to donate the bandwidth and time for such a xfer. I can bring my machine or just the HD if someone is willing. I am unemployed right now so *I* have lots of time but no $ or I would just buy the SuSE Personal Edition.
