In your XF86Config-4 file, there should be a Section "Screen", which has a Subsection "Display", which has a Modes line... here you might see "1200x1600", and can add the other resolutions you wish to switch to (ctrl-alt-keypad-plus/minus as you tried) or replace it wholesale with something preferable. Incidentally, I'm using RedHat 7.3 with XFree 4.2.0 and kernel 2.4.18.
