Justin,
        check your /etc/X11/XF86Config
you should have atleast  one section like this:
Section "Screen"
  DefaultDepth 16
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth      16
   Modes      "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  Device       "Device[0]"
  Identifier   "Screen[0]"
  Monitor      "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

The line that says modes is the one that says what resolutions you can
do (and the order....) This one starts x with 1280x1024 If I wanted it
to only do 1024, 800, 640, Id remove the "1280x1024"
You dont need modelines in X anymore (X 4 atlest) but you can  use them
if you want.
