Some of you are aware of my extensive list of rants associated with the
current state of the Linux desktop and all that it hasn't a clue how to
offer for some reason, despite an overwhelming supply of talent. To you
people, I offer only my deepest condolances. ;)

I've been thinking lately about .mac, a set of services Apple provides for
a yearly subscription fee. Turns out though that Linux can already do
just about everything the .mac servers can.

 - Email storage
   IMAP anyone?
 - Webmail access
If the mail is on the server, there's a number of options for that, and
some of them happen to even not suck!
 - Webspace
   Yeah.
 - Network features for iCal and other programs
   WebDAV, LDAP, SSL
 - Place to host files, remote backups of certain things, etc..
The only question here is how is the data sent? More WebDAV probably.

The things Linux doesn't do:

 - Silly email greeting cards and the like
 - [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address
 - anti-virus software updates
 - Special deals available to .mac users

Hmm, I think think the stuff that Linux could do is a project that is
worth looking into. At least some of it KDE and Gnome users can benefit
from today. Other benefits are possible once the setup becomes simpler.
Until then, parts of it would be integrated only on the Mac. Still, once
it's done and the servers tend to become more common, I think there will
be more integration..

Is anyone else interested in working on this?
