Brian,
I think i mentioned this before... but ill mention it again.

modprobe sb
this will likely make your sound work, however it may not be the ideal driver
for your card.

doing lsmod (as root on your linux system that does have sound working...)
will show you your loaded modules, you should see one for your sound device,
as well as one or more for sound in general (these are auto-loaded when your
sound driver (module) is loaded.)

its difficult to say from here... but probably you could get/use a hub/switch,
plug everything into it (computer, router, ...) and be set. There is this
networking protocol (tcp/ip) called Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision
Detect(CSMACD), which is often forgotten by even experienced network
people... basicly it means packets fly all over the place and get sucked up
by the appropriate computer.

packet collision! its ok... csmacd

:
: I want to work on getting the proper drivers installed for the sound card.
:
: Setup: initializing Knoppix gets this error message; initializing sound
: driver device/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device.)
:
: Run: lspci under Xterm (is this the terminal of choice?) produces; VIA
: Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 10)
:
: Ref: the motherboard CD finds Linux drivers for sound; RH 7.1, other
: distro's I'm not running, and some generics; 2216 and 240.
:
: Problem: where to go from here (its usually better to get the latest driver
: and I could probably run the same driver under knoppix or RH (yes /no ?)
:
: Google: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller

: Sample response:
:
: bought a new SiEMENS-PC with onboard VIA VT8233 AC97. get no sound in Linux
: RH
: 8. Win-Xp works properly. all other, like MDK, DEB or SUSI work proper too.
: RH 8 can4t find a /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp0.
: watched VIA Site. there is no driver for RH8 available (just RH7.3).
: somebody told me to use OSS drivers, but won4t work.
: ALSA doesn4t work with this kernel.

: Conclusion: looks like this is a common problem. Any suggestions (other
: then get a pci sound card?) If this isn't a reasonably easy fix I can
: wait -- there'll probably be a driver in a year or two.

I mean, well, if it were not for Linux I might be roaming the streets looking
for drugs or prostitutes or something. Hannu and Linus have my highest
admiration (apple polishing mode off).
