I got the driver from VIA, I can't figure out what it is. I am going to
spend some time learning the OS before I go any further. I can't keep
coming to the group without a fundamental understanding of the OS. In the
past I have tried to get everything working at once and that has been
disastrous.

If what I suggested earlier doesn't work try this in a root shell:

modprobe ac97

If that fails try

modprobe sb

If that fails then try getting a driver from this page:

http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=294

Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for Red Hat 8.0. The driver is
dated 2/13/03 so maybe they fixed the driver.....

I am going to keep my dual modem strategy till I get a better understanding
of networking.

I feel I am taking on too much, for a newbie.

I want to work on getting the proper drivers installed for the sound card.

Setup: initializing Knoppix gets this error message; initializing sound
driver device/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device.)

Run: lspci under Xterm (is this the terminal of choice?) produces; VIA
Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 10)

Ref: the motherboard CD finds Linux drivers for sound; RH 7.1, other
distro's I'm not running, and some generics; 2216 and 240.

Problem: where to go from here (its usually better to get the latest driver
and I could probably run the same driver under knoppix or RH (yes /no ?)

Google: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller

Ref: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=54905

Sample response:

bought a new SiEMENS-PC with onboard VIA VT8233 AC97. get no sound in Linux
RH
8. Win-Xp works properly. all other, like MDK, DEB or SUSI work proper too.
RH 8 can4t find a /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp0.
watched VIA Site. there is no driver for RH8 available (just RH7.3).
somebody told me to use OSS drivers, but won4t work.
ALSA doesn4t work with this kernel.

Conclusion: looks like this is a common problem. Any suggestions (other
then get a pci sound card?) If this isn't a reasonably easy fix I can
wait -- there'll probably be a driver in a year or two.
