Or would KDE run any better? I maybe have to switch to a >lighter window manager and those are just too slow on an older system. >I've got 128 MB of RAM in there. It sounds like you have enough ram, but kind of a slow CPU. so doing things that are graphics intensive (like gnome, kde, ENLIGHTEMNENT!) might be a bit slow... KDE3 has a eye-candy meter, which when you login the first time into kde, it will run a wizard... reduce the eyecandy meter for faster computing...) Im guessing Gnome is a bit too much for you. Id recommend KDE with lightweight settings, or even enlightemnt (E! is graphics heavy, but because it doesnt have a bunch of icons all over the place, it runs pretty decent. Any other resources? well... if the hardware is installed in a running linux system... /proc If you want to know before you buy... linux.org is a good start (they have a list of compatible hardware). Ive found that most stuff works under linux, brand spankin new video cards can be difficult, but eventually get drivers made. Another good resource is asking this list, or on #linux (irc) lots of people there already tried that hardware and can tell you exactly how to get it working!
