Well said, Ed! Howdy I'm Ben Barrett, a euglugger and linux
professional -- a 'consulting' mix of web programming and sysadminning,
I aspire to be a security expert and am looking forward to your presence
here!
I can suggest Spencer View apartments (at 24th and Patterson), as
I lived there during my senior year at UO where I got my CompSci BS 2
years ago now. The rent is quite reaonable, especially considering that
good bandwidth is included via "ResNet", the residential services of the
dorms and such -- although this off-campus location is on a separate
circuit from the dorm kiddies. I should watch my mouth -- you might
want to consider living in the dorms, I know some folks who actually
enjoyed it in their later-college/more-mature years, but I think they're
nutty, myself. ( =
Aside far as neighborhoods of Eugene go, I'd suggest anything south of
campus, I prefer trees and hills, although there are only a few around
eugene (one short ridge, hendricks hill, runs N-S just east of UO
campus, from the river south past 30th ave, and bumps toward Spencer's
Butte(which is due S of downtown). I like the "south hills" in general,
say between 30th or so out to where the streets get more irregular, by
50th or so might be a bit much for a campus-friendly bike commute unless
you like riding a lot. I'm in a cheap apartment at 27th just off Amazon
Parkway(and Amazon Park, a nice space to toss a frisbee or jog, etc)
which is$450 for a 2-bedroom, although they a fixing them up and raising
the price to I think $525... I'm guessing you also have the home-office
thing going. The neighborhoods to the west, of campus, and south, are
really nice too-- although the distance cuts in, you might notice
another ridge running from 18th south to ~29th, then more hills to the
S; this sort of divides the bustle of willamette, which is the "heart"
of the town (the 0 block), with the area to the west. Due west of
downtown is also a nice area, relatively quiet neighborhoods with older
houses... avoid 11th and 13th, as well as 6th and 7th, they are the main
arteries of traffic and tend to be noisy with it. 12th is a bike-mostly
street, which has cut off car traffic at regular intervals, and offers a
flat easy bike ride. I'm not personally fond of places in North Eugene,
mostly b/c I'm not familiar, but there are some nice 'hoods. My choices
there I think would be Garden Way and places near the Alton-Baker park,
since there are nice trails to walk skate or bike to campus through the
park and a footbridge across the river -- garden way has a major bike
lane on it. I think at eugene.com or some google treat, you can find a
bike map to fill in the bits I left out! Oh, 5th street (and down to
1st or so, where it goes through) is a nice hood although there is some
industry in that area, take notice of the train tracks as that makes
significant noise plus stops up traffic regularly. The industry seems
to be interpersed, between 1st and 4th from Skinner's Butte (by the
river, around where 1st and willamette would be) westward almost all the
way to the edge of eugene and beyond... 11th becomes the main westward
artery when 6th goes NW as highway 99. Confusing? I hope it makes
sense when you refer to the maps ( =
One more tip, before my brain gives up on this: look around for
DeLorme's "Oregon Gazeteer and Atlas", it is about the size of a US road
atlas but has every old back road in the state (forest roads, etc) -- so
whether you like to get lost or not, it is handy!
One last place to consider: August, Riverview and Sylvan streets are on
the *east* side of hendricks hill; they are kind of isolated from
Eugene, and it is more forested, but they do get some noise from I5 and
the train. From there, one can bike over the hill or around, it is not
very far (places in the hills tend to go for more, and be nicer)...
maybe this link will work:

garsh that's long... yeh the link and my bbbanter.
So, you start this fall? Cool, welcome!!
regards and ciao

| Generally, avoid anything within about two blocks to the South,
| and about six blocks to the West of the campus unless you really like
| the jock/Greek/party culture with attendant keggers, followed by the
| Eugene Police Department's efforts to shut them down, followed by
| riots and tear gas. The riots are rare, maybe one a year, but the
| noise level around the parties can be disturbing enough without the
| EPD's help.

|
| Most of Eugene is bikeable, the bike lanes and paths are
| ubiquitous, check in with the Chamber of Commerce for a free, pretty
| good bicycle street map.
|
| The off campus University housing complexes, Spencer View and
| Westmoreland, are overrrun with graduate students, and fairly quiet.
| Both are well outside the party/free fire zone.
|
| Anyway, send on addresses to the list and yeah, you'll get
| reasonable (if varied) answers.

|
| Contribute to the list. Keep us amused. Be helpful. Keep
| yourself
| amused. Realise that we don't take ourselves seriously until we're
| looking for help, but help on this list is surprisingly useful,
| surprisingly often.
