I'm sorry - the upgrade was to 3.1.3 not 3.1.2. Don't have Gnome installed but if I use a non-kde app like Mozilla or Gimp the file dialogs are fine.
The minimize memory use setting is "local browsing only". I'll look about for something from the Cooker. An interesting work around - if you have Kate running and from the Konsole you say 'kate /path/filetoedit' It will a add the file to the list of opened files in Kate.
