So there is this project called LUFS (Linux Userspace File System) who are th same fine folks who brought you sshfs and ftpfs

Actually I can think of one very useful application,
providing a way to quickly and easily make available the contents of a database as a file hierarchy. Or adding all sorts of MetaData munging into the file hierarchy....
