Perhaps not generic enough, but for going through ranges, I always use seq, part of the GNU Shell Utilities package:
$ for i in `seq 1 10`; do echo $i; done 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 $ Jason __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo!
