That is so funny! I was just about to post a message saying something like that! It turned out that the sound laptop I had recently installed everything on did actually have the sound card setup correctly, it was just the volume was turned off. So... so far slackware setup and configured everything correctly in this laptop. this is also true of Knoppix, Knoppix actually runs pretty well right from the cd. Thanks for the tip on the alsa gui mixer, Ill look for that. I often just use rexima (console mixer)
