As far as using FreeBSD on the desktop, I've been doing so for the past year
on that orange box, using the GNOME/Metacity desktop that's one of the
options during the install. (Metacity is billed as "the window manager for the adult in you")

upgrading is easy, and if you do it regularly it's not that time consuming.

the CVSup process is rational and simple,
you can actually run linux binaries (unless you turn off the ABI compatibility
and recompile away from the GENERIC kernel build that's included at installation)

The network stack and firewall packet filter are solid well thought out tools.

FreeBSD is what get's used for line of business servers at EFN. And it's a very solid and stable base to build on.

It's not the right answer for everything, but it's a pretty good answer for building
a box to deliver services that need stability and uptime.

Jason, if you like OpenBSD, but want more hardware
support
for your desktop needs, why not try out NetBSD?

I'm not too awfully worried about hardware, since I'll be using pretty standard gear (laptop actually). I am most interested in software maintainability. I've always liked ports, which is why I've been considering Gentoo as well.

I'm becoming less a fan of maintaining currency via
binary packages, and the way I tend to organize and
set up my systems, building from source tends to be
easier and quicker even factoring in build times.

Plus, just about everything (if not all) I need will
run on FreeBSD, so I figured I might give it a shot on
my next work pc.

Thanks everyone for your comments - Jason
