Hrrmm.... Ive used xawtv for years... ive never heard of the tuner= parameter,
but if it works....
I used to have to specify a bunch of stuff in my /etc/modules.conf (all the
parameters for bttv) like so:
#alias char-major-81 bttv
# TV
alias char-major-81 bttv
#pre-install bttv modprobe -k tuner
#options bttv radio=0 card=38
#options tuner type=8 type=8
As you can see, they are commented out (right now the tuner card is on the
floor as I forgot to bring the cables with me!).
Then in my rc.local, I load bttv (modprobe bttv)
The manufacture of my card makes 3 models, mine has no radio tuner, so its set
to 0. There is also a card setting, and a type setting. You can google for
the right settings for your card (unless your the first to use it with
linux...)
I had to try a couple settings before I got it right.

I once witnessed a long-winded, month-long flamewar over the use of
mice vs. trackballs... It was very silly.
