the md5 sum should be the same given identical inputs
are you checksumming two different items (ie. a gzipped file versus an uncompressed one?)


Is the file a standard ISO9660 that might have been created at different times? (that might explain the discrepancy).

more exotic issues might have to do with stray inputs like server headers getting included in the digest (this would be a problem with the download software you are using, running strings against the downloaded image might confirm this)

Or it could be that the download site is not updating the checksum when they post a new version (in which case do you really want to use that source?)
