Its a little more complicated than that. When I brought up Knoppix it was immediately obvious that sound was working. This despite the fact that I hadn't had working sound for at least a year. That is an important note. I haven't had good luck with Linux sound in the past. I didn't have good expectations.
When I brought up Debian I didn't have that same opportunity to immediately check that it was working (with the same setup) because I had to move the computer to a different location to get adequate download speeds for a network install. And I left the speakers behind because they weren't needed for the install. When I got the system back home I tried to make sound with both connectors. Didn't work. But it wasn't a priority, so I set it aside for a week or so while I worked on other problems. When I got back to sound I messed with the software. But I assumed I had left the plug in the right socket. Wrong. So I did have to mess with the software. But I also had created a hardware problem earlier. I am perfectly willing to blame hardware. I am a chip designer. I have a lot of experience picking out hardware versus software problems. Of course, some problems could easily be either. And this was one of those. -- Allen Brown work: Agilent Technologies non-work: http://www.peak.org/~abrown/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Puritanism - The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy. --- H.
