Can you boot Knoppix on your laptop?  If so, you can remount
the root file system rw.  Then you can edit the password file
to replace the root password.

Another option is to get one of those laptop IDE to full IDE
adapter cards.  You can then plug the drive into your desktop
computer and mount it.
