what MTA are you running on the debian system, by default it will have exim configured submit only, If you are going to be using it as a mailhost, I would suggest replacing exim with sendmail or postfix, (or qmail if that's your flavor)
If you are already up and running with an MTA, DNSis the first place I'd look.
