Do you mean "How do I enter characters with accents and umlauts?"

If so, then you want to go to the "Insert" menu, and choose "Symbol..."
(or press its hotkey, control-W). This brings up a window called
"Symbols", where you can choose from a variety of unusual characters. If
you don't see the character you want, pop open the "Set" menu to choose an
alternate character set. You'll find more characters than you'll ever
need for most western European languages in the "Multinational" set.

To insert a character, double-click on it, or click once on it and then
click the "Insert" button at the bottom of the window.
