I'm not sure it does much for cataloging but I use GQVIEW for managing all my photos. You can move and batch rename with it. Editing is all done externally using whatever you like. I use Gimp for resizing a few photos and found a nice little script that will dump an entire folder into preset sizes and generate an html page.
