Before you do anything, If you can make an image backup of the whole disk(
not just of the partitions, do it! Mandriva's Mandrake 10.1 can read NTFS
(it also can resize NTFS).  I don't know if Windows XP and the like has an
unformat or not. If so you
might try unformatting the disk. Beware fat32 makes a 2nd copy of the FAT.
If NTFS also makes a 2nd copy, it is possible only one had been altered.  If
given a choice try each until you find the file.  This is one reason for
making the backup.  It unsures you have a copy if trying to recover the file
messes up the disk contents.
  I got in trouble trying to halt a format that was in progress, to the
point that it altered the size of the disk that the partition table
reported. Fortunately it was 23 hours before the warranty ran out.  It
needed a program typed in thru debug to rewrite the partition table of the
disk to fix.
