the problem is they are not very modular, so the information about all
these systems is scattered throughout the code.  that's kinda evil.

the true evil is the way people actually use the autotools, and expect
that because their projects build correctly on Linux, they will
everywhere because the autotools will do this for them ... yeah, right.

the autotools also rely on gnu extensions to m4.
