Could be a problem with the actual enclosure. What kind is it?
The cheaper plastic ones tend to be more flaky in their
performance. What kind of drive did you put in it? What jumper
settings on the drive? Most prefer to be set at "master". If
it's a WD, don't go by the label and just turn the jumper
sideways. All other manufacturers the jumper goes closest to the
IDE cable. 

As for MIR, you can have them. Quality before quantity will
always get you a winner.
