As an Ubuntu/Gentoo user.... Ubuntu is great for my laptop. I need the "desktop" feel and use Gnome with Evolution and icons for quick launch on frequent programs. Also use/need the batter meter, clock, and other goodies up top.
On my desktop, I'm minimalist. Fluxbox, no icons, Gkrellm with a few plugins, XMMS on some random desktop controlled by joystick so I don't have to look at it and quick access via right click to all my needed apps. On Ubuntu I could care less about all the extra services running. Because everything on Gnome is tied together fairly well I'm comfortable with it as is. Plus I use it as an oppurtunity to show others linux. I tried Ubuntu at home. Lasted almost a week. I will agree that Gentoo is a PITA but I enjoy the bare neccessities with it. Out of date packages and everything masked is lame so I've made casual changes to packages.keywords to fix that without blowing the whole thing up. Also just install a few things directly from source myself. That way I keep Firefox, Mozilla, NVU, and other quick install programs up to date easily. Of course the fileserver is still humming along fine with Slackware so no worries or hurries there. I'd like to drop an Infrant in it's place though. That be all of my meaningless babble.
