Mr. O:
fdisk gives me a read error. Just like if I try to fdisk a device
that isn't there.
I haven't seen the dmesg after I plug it in. It does not automount,
so I'm not sure if it would spit out a dmesg. I can check.
horst:
I haven't modified /etc/fstab or /etc/mstab. I just have a shell
script that executes 'mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb'. It tries
sda1 first, if that fails it rolls over to sdb1. This way I can
rotate drives and usb ports easy.

What's the "dmesg" output after plugging the drive in? Can you
see it with "fdisk" or "cfdisk"?

Howdy folks,
I'm working with a redhat 9 (shrike) system. It acts as a
file
server, and I use some cron scripts to mount a few different
usb hard
drives to dump backups onto. This allows the hard drives to
be
easily rotated and used as offsite back ups. For wide spread
OS
readability I use a vfat format type.
Recently we swapped external enclosures on one of the hard
drives,
and now the redhat 9 system will not read it or mount it.
However,
any other system will mount the drive fine. (tried with OS X
and
Fedora). I would like to avoid updating the file servers OS
seeing
as I don't really have a lot of extra time to devote to it.
Does anyone have any advice or know why the drive might not be
mountable?
Thanks,
Jim
