Perhaps the best time for a beginners series would be a couple weeks after the Oregon Country Fair. My thinking on the timing is usually we have several people at the fair giving out Linux CD's. If we attached a small flyer about the training session it would get more people interested.

Matt,
An excellent Idea. I've thought about similar things in the past. I
agree that many people prefer a live human being who can react to their
confusion to a disinterested webpage or email. If we plan on doing
this, I'd like to take suggestions for topics. I'll follow up this
email with another which is a CLASS TOPICS subject for responses.

I's suggest that any classes, or "targeted clinics" focus on some topics
even more simple than you have mentioned. Like Using OpenOffice in
place of MS Office. We should group topics as Beginner, Intermediate,
and Advanced. One person can present, and we could have 3 or 4 others
whose job it is to give one on one assistance throughout the hands on
portion of the course. I've taught similar courses on other subjects in
the past. Lets make exploring this idea the official topic for next
week's meeting. In the meantime, suggestions from the peanut gallery?

So as I sit here researching disk partitioning ideas, I had a thought that might help spark some interest and/or attendance at future meetings.

Have you guys ever had focused training classes that cover the basics? For example, at an evening session, rather than a general free for all, have an 'official' topic such as:

Hard Disk setup, partitioning, maintenance
Linux Versions pros and cons (no religious wars allowed!)
Installing Linux apps issues using the various tools.methods
Getting on the net with Linux (connections, Surf, email)
Wireless setup
Troubleshooting hardware problems/drivers
General troubleshooting
Scheduling tasks

on and on...

Heck, even a nimrod like me could probably teach another newbie how to use cron.

Maybe divide and conquer, setting up day long sessions with various presenters? I know there have been a few Sat sessions, but they seemed focused well beyond beginner level.

Yes, I realize that the vast majority of the topics are covered ad nauseum on the net, but newbies might not know that or just want that warm and fuzzy feeling of a live body to answer some questions...

Of course, it's always easy to make suggestions when someone else has to do the work, so forgive me if you've tried this before and it either failed to gel or this isn't the focus of what you want to accomplish with EUGLUG.

I *can* help facilitate scheduling and so forth if that helps... We could announce the next training topic at SAO things and get it out in our newsletter etc.

I want to learn, and I'm willing to help where I can.
