This is truly the RAID season. Dunno what virus we caught, but it
looks like everybody is asking/learning about RAID. Both on EUGLUG
and other lists I'm on.

In February, I built my RAID test box. Didn't get a chance to start
experimenting with it until last night.

I have at least two goals: I want to understand how to build and
configure these things and learn what works and what to avoid. Also,
I want to get some idea of the performance and reliability of software
RAID in various configurations.

My RAID test box is a scrap bin special. That means it's basically
useless for any kind of performance testing -- the CPU is slow, and it
doesn't have much RAM, and it has two disks per IDE channel. But it
has six disks, so I can make some really wide RAIDs.

I started out doing everything through EVMS. I haven't decided
whether that was a good idea or not. (Opinions?) EVMS is not very
transparent, and it seems like not everything works.
