Running 64 bit sles9 on an Opteron really opened my eyes.. it screams.. I use it wherever possible. So far i've only done single CPU however.. the real boost of Opterons happen with 2 or more processors so you get the data channel going. ( and you need sperate RAM for each CPU ) . Hoping to do a good DB server test someday soon.

We also aahve 64bit SLES on Intel ( 64 extensions ) for a new backup media server.. the server also does encryption before shipping to tape and the 64bit there seems to help really move things along.. at least our tests seem to show that. (and in some test cases running encryption is even faster than without.. which doesnt make musch sense - unless possibly the data simply flows better like that to tape or something ?? )

I'm in the process of building a new server and I have a decision to make: Do I install 32-bit or 64-bit Linux

I don't have your answer; I have a question.

How much faster/slower is an Opteron running 32 bit code vs. 64 bit
code?

It's not clear to me whether your server will be working hard enough
that you care, but I'm curious.
